Work Education Curriculum Activity Suggestions
by Beverley Paine, August 2022
A member of my The Educating Parents Homeschooling and Unschooling group requested ideas for writing on her child's learning plan for Stage 4 (Year 7&8) Work Education (instead of doing HASS at that level).
I had a quick look at the outcomes on the NSW Syllabus website and came up with these off the top of my head suggestions for activities:
- Create a spreadsheet of all the different industries, list the different occupations under each, research necessary qualifications and remuneration (wages/salary) typical for those occupations
- Review spreadsheet and look back in time to see what those jobs may have been called back then, if they existed, highlight on the spreadsheet new jobs
- create a list of safe working rules (workplace health and safety rules) for the family
- start a small business for a local kids or community market
- volunteers for a community organisation (perhaps a different one each term)
- visit local government offices, attend a council/shire meeting
- interviews someone from a local business association about current economic conditions and doing business in the area now and into the future, writes up interview and sends it to local newspaper for consideration
- researches resumes and writes one for self
- researches and compiles a 'road map' for entering a preferred career when older - course options, prerequisities, skills list, etc
- does 3 online personality quizzes, critiques all of them noting similarities, differences, relevance, etc

Welcome to the World of Home Education
and Learning without School!
We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine

Home education is a legal alternative
to school education in Australia.
State and Territory governments are responsible
for regulating home education and have different
requirements, however home educating families
are able to develop curriculum and learning programs
to suit the individual needs of their children.
